1B: Palliative Care for Patients with Dementia

This session will address advance care planning for patients with dementia. The timing of admission to hospice for patients with dementia based on Medicare criteria will be reviewed. Issues of artificial nutrition and hydration, developing a palliative feeding plan, symptom management will be discussed. Particular focus will be placed on optimal management of behavioral symptoms: when and which medications are to be used to palliate these symptoms. Recognition and management of pain will be discussed.
By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the unique factors to consider in advance care planning with dementia patients
  • List the important factors that guide family and staff as feeding issues develop with dementia patients
  • Explain the factors to consider in addressing behavioral issues with dementia patients and which pharmacologic interventions are optimal
