1E: Pacemaker Deactivation by Request

Jennifer Kuyava, MD; Katy Hentges, NP

Patients and families are increasingly requesting deactivation of a pacemaker in order to ensure a natural end of life. There is not a lot of support for this in the medical community, so we created a procedure to support our providers in honoring these requests and pt/family rights for autonomy.
By the end of the session, learners will be able to:
Explain the ethical justification for deactivation of a pacemaker per patient or family request

  • Create a procedure for pacemaker deactivation at their own institution
  • Feel more comfortable honoring patient and family wishes for withdrawing a no longer desired therapy
