3L: Palliative Care and Hospice Care in Patients with End Stage Renal Disease

This session will address advance care planning in patients with ESRD and address the benefits and burdens of Dialysis. It will explore the symptom management for patients with ESRD and pharmacologic issues that need to be addressed to avoid drug toxicity. The decision to terminate dialysis will be examined and the issues of prognostication for these patients and their palliative management will be presented.

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the shared decision making process that should be employed when determining the appropriateness of dialysis in patients with ESRD
  • Understand the pharmacologic considerations for patients with ESRD
  • Describe prognostic considerations that should be supplied to patients when choosing their best plan of care when suffering from ESRD
