5A: Does Your State Make the Grade? A Deep Dive into the 2019 State-by-State Palliative Care Report Card

Stacie Sinclair, MPP, CSW

Over the last two decades, palliative care has grown from a niche field to a vital part of the U.S. health care system. This is due in part to the recognition that palliative care improves quality of life for patients and families, reduces symptom burden, and – by providing the right care at the right time – reduces cost. Yet, despite continued growth in hospital palliative care teams, access to palliative care remains highly variable. The 2019 State-by-State Report Card on Access to Palliative Care in Our Nation’s Hospitals analyzes whether patients living with a serious illness in the United States are receiving equitable access to palliative care services in hospitals. This presentation will explore how the Report Card was developed and its findings, and highlight opportunities for state champions to expand access moving forward.

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  • Describe trends in hospital palliative care prevalence, including Minnesota’s performance over time
  • Describe state-level policy progress and gaps
